Livable Communities: The Choice of the New Generation

America’s Millennial Generation is the country’s most ethnically and racially diverse cohort of youth in the nation’s history. The Millennial generation, or Generation Y as many know it, encompasses those born from roughly 1980 through 2000. Research shows that this young, vibrant, and technology-savvy generation is setting a new course for the future that almost directly opposes that of their parents. Trends show that this group relies less on cars, is more prone to take public transit, and is looking to live in smaller homes or apartments in more urban environments, as opposed to the suburbs where they may have been raised. This generation will become the next first-time homebuyers, and they are choosing to live in walkable neighborhoods close to restaurants, shopping, and other amenities — qualities of life that are highly valued and readily available in the Classic Towns of Greater Philadelphia.
