The Best Summer Activities in the Classic Towns

Summer is the best time to get outside and truly enjoy all the activities and events the Classic Towns provide. From concerts and festivals, to markets and camps, the towns offer affordable events perfect for a range of ages. Here are 10 ideas that will make everyone happy while not breaking your budget!

1. Glassboro Summer Fest 

Thursdays, June 1st to July 20th 
Glassboro, NJ Town Square 

Join Downtown Glassboro for the first ever Summer Fest! Enjoy live entertainment from a variety of bands and interactive activities, as well as food trucks and local craft beer. Appel Farm will provide experiential arts activities every Thursday that will allow the public, of all ages and abilities, to engage in meaningful art making. You can snack on treats from local favorites while sipping on New Jersey spirits. The event is ideal for the whole family, so feel free to bring the kids! Come out to the Town Square on Thursdays, 5-9pm, from June 1st to July 20th.

2. Stroll the Street in Manayunk 

Thursdays, June 1st to August 31st 
Manayunk, PA Main Street

Be sure to mark your calendar for Manayunk’s Stroll the Street, beginning June 1st and going through August 31st. The town will host local food trucks, vendors, and live music along Main Street as visitors and residents walk, shop, and eat. Select Manayunk restaurants will feature $5 cocktail and appetizer specials, while retailers will hold discounts, trunk shows, and other promotions. Each week will feature a new theme, such as beach night, pet night, and even fitness night! Enjoy the themes as a family or make it a date night. Stroll the Street will be Thursdays from 5pm-sundown.

3. Weaving Longitudes Lansdowne Arts Board Show 

Weekends, May 1st to June 25th 
20 Lansdowne Court, Lansdowne PA

Weaving Longitudes will survey the work of Leanne Grimes and Lisa Haskell, two artists who intersect and overlap in their explorations of time, space, and memory. The culmination of this show focuses on how the two weave their stories as mothers, daughters, and art educators onto the walls of the 20*20 House with work they have made throughout their careers. The Lansdowne gallery will be open this summer on weekends, 12-4pm, until June 25th. This art event is great for couples looking for a cultural day out and art aficionados in the Classic Towns.

4. Cheltenham Center for the Arts Summer Camp 

June 19th to August 25th 
439 Ashbourne Road, Cheltenham PA

Look no further than the Cheltenham Center for the Arts Summer Camp to be the highlight of your future artist’s year. The camp is specially designed for young minds who enjoy activities in the visual and performing arts (ages are grouped 5-12 and 13-17). The programs give children the chance to develop creative skills for self-expression and provide participants with a varied schedule that maintains a high level of interest and fun. Activities involving painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, collage, and theater run from June 19th to August 25th, with a variety of options and hours to accommodate most needs. Don’t miss out on registration for one of these exciting and educational sessions!

5. Collingswood Summer Restaurant Week

July 23rd to the 28th 
Collingswood, NJ Restaurant Row 

South Jersey’s “Restaurant Row” will host a “Fresh From the Farm” Restaurant Week July 23rd to 28th. The registered restaurants will host a multi-course meal with a set price that showcases their special menus. Businesses include Tortilla Press, IndeBlue, Nunzio Ristorante Rustico, El Sitio, Bisto di Mario, Sabrina’s Cafe, Oasis Mexican Grill, That’s Amore, Indiya, and Villa Barone. There is no better way to experience local summer flavor than in a tasteful Classic Town. Be sure to make reservations ahead of time because seating is limited!

6. Welcome America: Ring out Freedom and Independence in Germantown

July 4th 
Historic Germantown, PA 

Join the community of Germantown on July 4th for a day of celebration. Help ring in our independence with visits to the area’s prominent historic sites: Cliveden, Concord School House, and Johnson House. Built in 1768, the Johnson House is one of Germantown’s oldest existing year-round homes and today remains an important landmark in this Classic Town. The day will feature reenactments, bell-ringing, guided tours, and storytelling surrounding the history of the abolitionist movement. Welcome America will be 11am-4pm, is free to the public, and is the perfect way for the whole family to learn more about the colorful past located so close to home!

7. Lansdale Beer Tasting Festival 

June 24th 
5th Street and Wood Street, Lansdale PA 

If cold brews and good food is your thing, this Lansdale fundraising event on June 24th is definitely the spot for you! The Lansdale Beer Tasting Festival is intended to be an opportunity to sample some of the best regional and national craft beers, accompanied by delicious food, music, and great people. Local vendors will be in attendance for a variety of snacking options as tunes from Mike Greer & Company entertain the crowds. VIP admission is $75 and entrance will be 12-5pm, while general admission is $45 for 2-5pm. The event is for ages 21 and up and offers a wonderful chance for friends to get together for a day of quality drinks and good times!

 

8. Jenkintown Borough Summer Music Series 

Tuesdays, May 23rd to August 29th 
Jenkintown, PA Town Square

The sound of music has begun wafting through the trees of Jenkintown’s beautiful Town Square this summer, with free, live music scheduled every Tuesday night at 7pm. The Summer Music Series will run until August 29th and will feature a different band every week. The program will offer something for all tastes, with musical acts including retro, rock, folk, jazz, and even performances for children! Pack up a picnic basket with some tasty Jenkintown takeout, bring lawn chairs, and sit back and relax at the Town Square for this free event all summer long!

9. West Chester Summer Sidewalk Sale 

July 18th to the 24th 
Downtown West Chester, PA 

Downtown West Chester is hosting a fabulous 6-day sidewalk sale that will feature a variety of unique shops where you can explore a vast selection of accessories, apparel, gifts, home decor, specialty foods, and more. Beginning July 18th, you can browse participating local retailers for that special something for you or a loved one! The week-long sale doubles as a great way to get outside and enjoy the beautiful summer weather. Make sure you stop into one of the fantastic West Chester restaurants to truly make it an eventful day out!

 

10. Oxford Village Summer Market

Tuesdays, June 6th to August 22nd

Market and Locust Streets, Oxford PA 

Round up the kids and head over to the Oxford Village Summer Market every Tuesday at 1pm. The market will host interactive activities such as crafting, candle- dipping, weaving, and yarn-spinning as well as a special story time. Check out the outdoor farmer’s market for local produce and goods while the kids are entertained with engaging arts and crafts. This program will run until August 22 so you’ll always have a plan for Tuesday while the kiddos are on school vacation!
